Rev. Daniel Hartley
I’ve been the Priest-in-Charge of St Mary’s, Beighton and St James, Woodhouse since November 2023.
I was born and brought up in Leeds and was ordained in 1999, serving as a Curate in Richmond, North Yorkshire. After this I became a full-time Prison Chaplain at HMYOI Deerbolt in County Durham. I loved my time in prison(!!!), but felt a call back to parish ministry. In 2011 I was appointed as Vicar of Ecclesfield here in the Sheffield Diocese. By 2015 it was time for a complete change and, as a family, we relocated to the south coast of Devon. I became Rector of five rural parishes in the South Hams, living in the beautiful village of Thurlestone (near Salcombe and Kingsbridge). We had a great time in Devon but, again, felt the call to move on. This time we wanted to make a permanent move and so I thought (and prayed) long and hard about it. After careful consideration I knew, deep down, that I wanted to come back to Sheffield. I love this city and its people. I was extremely pleased to be offered my current post and relish the opportunity to serve in this part of God’s creation.
I’m married to Emma and we have three grownup(ish) children and one grandchild. One of the joys of returning to Yorkshire is that we’re closer to family. I enjoy spending time with family but have other interests as well. I’m a passionate collector of music (I’m a buyer not a streamer!) and enjoy films, binge watching TV series and occasional pastimes that involve leaving the house.
My work involves empowering and enabling the Church to grow. In order to do this I believe that the Church needs to play its part in community life. We need to partner with other groups and agencies as we seek to build sustainable communities for the future. I am committed to this work and particularly committed to our work with children and young people in the local schools. I look forward to all that the future has to offer!
